Description & History

One of our initial goals is to decrease at-risk behavior among our inner city children.  We have been prevalent in connecting with youth through sports and recreation.  More importantly, we  provide mentoring activities with positive role models in lectures, workshops and life skills activities.   With an increased membership within our youth basketball and flag football leagues, tennis and chess we have been successful in promoting citizenship, teammanship, respect for peers and adults while reducing juvenile delinquency rates. VOC  provides college bound activities that have included college tours for the past two years. Currently we operate an afterschool program at the John C. Anderson Cultural Recreation Center at 5301 Overbook ave., known as "OPTIONS for Success".

Our OPTIONS program   provides alternatives for Real Life Job Training skills, academic enrichment writing , college prep training for  PSAT, SAT’s and ACT test training; along with  FAFSA completion and assisting parents with navigating the college admission process with the support and asistance of membering organizations such as PCPR, OSTRC and PYASN. Our goal is  to impact and improve the lives of students from educationally and/or economically disadvantaged communities utilizing sports based youth develpment strategies  sponsored by and with our  partner organizations such as the Philadelphia Youth Sports Collaborative (PYSC) to acheive the  outcomes of citizenship, respect for peers and adults, teammanship, increased selft estem , reduced juvelnile recidivism while increasing graduation and  college admissions rates and having viable careers choices. In addition we provide opportunities for community service and project based learning.  VOC has been the lead agency for several years in hosting Global Youth Service Day during the month of April in partnership with Youth Service of America.   Our coaches are trained by Coach Across America and UP2US and most importantly, our volunteer staff is committed to improving the lives of Philadelphia' youth.  Finally, we are always looking for committed volunteer staff both adults and youths.
