Launch of Global Citizen's Mission365
On Tuesday, September 11th, Mayor Michael A. Nutter presented the first annual Mission365 Active Citizenship Award to former Tuskegee Airman, Major John L. Harrison, Jr. (Air Force, retired). Mr. Harrison was recognized for his active citizenship in the military, for heading the Peace Corps in Swaziland, and for serving as regional director of key national service programs, including ACTION, Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA) and the Foster Grandparents program.
The event, marking the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance, was held in the Mayor’s Reception Room. Prior to the ceremony, local veterans’ organizations hosted tables with information about their work and opportunities to support their efforts through volunteer service. In addition, Global Citizen, which directs the annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service and year-round MLK365 volunteer program, announced details of a new year-round partnership, entitled Mission365, between military members, veterans, and their families with local organizations and community volunteers.

What is Mission365?
Global Citizen's new Mission365 program will connect the military and civilian sectors through volunteer service. Mission365 will provide volunteer opportunities that both engage military veterans and support veteran-serving organizations.
Mission365 will provide employment resources for veterans and help build ongoing partnerships among local military, their families, and veteran-serving organizations with local community-based organizations and service programs throughout the Philadelphia-area.
Mission365 events in 2012 and 2013 on Veterans Day and January’s annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service will bring together volunteers from the military and local communities to serve and engage veterans. A King Day of Service Jobs & Opportunity Fair will connect local veterans and military families with job opportunities and employment skills workshops.
Mission365 will also focus on strengthening partnerships between local veteran-serving and community organizations through the creation of a veteran-serving agency database.
